The role:

You’ll work on and develop cutting edge technology using state-of-the-art approaches to make metabolic pathway predictions that inform strain engineering projects. You’ll collaborate with wet lab teams to test these predictions, the goal being to discover and develop novel biochemical pathways for the production of renewable chemicals and materials.    


  • Develop a systems biology platform to integrate quantitative metabolomics and fluxomics data into computational models 

  • Predict targets for optimizing metabolic yields for microbial fermentations at multiple scales, from flasks to bioreactors

  • Generate hypotheses and testable predictions in a fast-paced metabolic engineering environment

    • Developing metabolic models: 

      • flux-balance analysis 

      • next-generation metabolic engineering 

    • Biological data analysis: 

      • Engineering data flows to compare model predictions to experimental data

      • Decipher biological data complexity to highlight key features that will help teams reach milestones efficiently


  • Ph.D. in Metabolic Engineering, Systems Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology etc.

  • Hands-on laboratory experience with isotopic labeling and MFA

  • Deep expertise in metabolic engineering, pathway discovery, microbial physiology, and biochemistry

  • Experience with genome-scale metabolic modeling software (e.g., COBRA, RAVEN)

  • Experience with computer programming languages (Python, C++, Matlab)

  • Experience with machine learning for data analysis

  • Strong computational, technical, organizational, and communication skills, as well as the ability to develop creative solutions to challenging problems
