Our Cambridge-based client is seeking an exceptional metabolic engineer to develop their growing pipeline of renewable  chemicals. They are looking for a solid scientist who also has a knack for market analysis and paths toward commercialization – this person will have a major influence in the development of their intellectual property portfolio of renewable materials! 

We’re looking for someone to be scientific lead on research projects to discover, develop, and deploy novel biocatalysts for the production of renewable chemicals and materials. 


  • Via independent research, continuously refine and expand the company’s intellectual property portfolio 

  • Research biological/biochemical pathways and constituent enzymes for the production of target molecules

  • Design and perform experiments for strain and pathway testing and optimization

    • Molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA subcloning, cell transformation, cell culture, and other advanced methods

    • Biochemical techniques such as protein purification, enzymatic assays, structure-function analysis, and other advanced methods

  • Use creative problem-solving skills to independently troubleshoot experimental challenges

  • Collaborate with team members to accomplish project goals and milestones, and guide/support junior team members

  • Track, analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to team members.


  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular biology, or equivalent.

  • 5+ years of post-doctoral industrial experience.

  • Strong background in microbial physiology, metabolic engineering, and biochemical pathway engineering, biochemistry and current biochemical technologies

  • Expertise in using model organisms such as E. coli and/or Saccharomyces cerevisiae  

  • Experience designing metabolic pathways for the bioproduction of commodity chemicals 

  • Familiarity with analytical techniques for metabolite detection 

  • Creativity, entrepreneurship, initiative and good critical judgment 

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with a wide range of departments and personalities
