Associate Scientist, Upstream MSAT (Temp to Perm)

Our pharmaceutical client here in Boston, MA is growing and looking to add an Associate Scientist, Upstream MSAT (temp to perm) to their team!    This onsite, wet lab-based role will be responsible to execute MS&T Upstream Processing activities within the Technical Operations department. The MS&T team aims to address potential program risks and devise process improvements as their main asset gets closer to phase III. This individual will be responsible for experimental execution in the MS&T team, including bioreactor operation and maintenance, small scale cell culture, viral titering, statistical analysis and presentation of data, tech transfer, and support of laboratory excellence. Minimal requirements for this role include experience operating bioreactor systems, excellent aseptic technique, statistical analysis experience, and viral vector experience.  Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Conducts routine bioreactor operations independently with minimal supervision.
  • Laboratory techniques include but are not limited to bioreactor setup, operation and maintenance, vendor interaction, cell culture/expansion, culture infection and sampling, seed train maintenance, viral titration, and stock preparation.
  • Utilizes bioreactor experience to provide support for process scale-up, scale down model validation and late state process development activities.
  • Analyze and help interpret data using industry standard statistical software tools (JMP).
  • Records data in research ELN and reports results according to industry standards.
  • Collaborates with managers to integrate experimental design and outcomes for presentation to team and program members. Prepares written / oral reports for presentation to the research group and senior staff and makes recommendations based on data and program team feedback.
  • Manages Upstream MS&T raw material and consumable inventory and prepares media, buffers, and additional formulations as needed. Assists in reagent and consumable ordering and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and techniques.
  • Assists communication with internal functional teams and external CROs.


  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering or related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant wet lab experience or equivalent. Hands-on experience in bioreactor set up, operation and maintenance. Working knowledge of downstream processing and analytical assay result interpretation.
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely, recognize deviations, and recommend corrective action within the scope of training. Capable of moderately complex troubleshooting of experiment and equipment issues.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of cross-functional teams in a highly dynamic, fast-paced, matrixed environment.
  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.), JMP and other related software.
